My past is at the tip

This week I destroyed some of my history.

I am moving house shortly and decided that I am tired of carrying the same old rubbish from house to house. So I took a trip to the tip and left lots of my past at the bottom of a rubbish skip.

Maybe that’s where all of my past belongs.

We tend to cling to our past as if it gives us justification our existence right now. It really has very little value.

Some claim that they learned lessons from their past. Lessons for what reason? Do you think that you are going to graduate when you die so that you can use all of these valuable lessons in some higher calling?

I only experience a snippet of the myriad things going on around me at any instant. I could never take it all in. So even the present is only the thinnest slice of what is really happening. My past is even less than this.

My past is only a sliver of unreliable memory about the thinnest slice of reality. My past is built from vague recollections, smothered in emotions, hopes and disappointments. My past is an imagined series of events created from narrow and limited views of recalled real life.

This week I destroyed a lot of my imagined past, who knows what it was really like! But I certainly don’t miss what I imagined I was!
